College Thomasians joined the Gender Sensitivity Training under Lunhaw Ecological Ministry of the Diocese of San Carlos last March 16 to 17, 2024 at the Ubuntu Hall, Bishops Home San Carlos City.

Institute of Women’s Studies (IWS) member Ms. Aida Gaerlan discussed gender sensitivity, explaining the difference between sex and gender, gender roles, gender stereotypes, sexual division and the myth of sexual division. After the lecture, activities that inculcate gender sensitivity values were conducted for participants from the Vicariates of Calatrava, Canlaon, Vicariate of San Carlos, Punao Bamboo Forest Community, Colegio de Sta. Rita de San Carlos, Inc., and Colegio de Sto. Tomas-Recoletos, Inc. College Department.

IWS Representative Mr. Frederick Pablico  discussed two umbrella topics: gender and development and sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). Pablico explained the different types of sexuality, threshed out the issue on equality versus equity, patriarchy. The different laws protecting the rights of individuals concerning gender were also covered.

At the crux of the training, it was emphasized that women are equal to men, crashing the patriarchal beliefs that women are weak and dependent on men and that men are strong leaders.

“Gender inequality is not a war against men and women, but [both] men and women against patriarchy,” Pablico told the young participants.

The activity ended with the participants sharing their insights on the topics discussed.
