Thomasian twelfth graders placed third during the AMPLIFY Eco-No Mix 2022 Economics Quiz Bee and Essay Writing of the University of the Philippines Organization of Business Economics Major (UP OBEM).
Alyana N. Yap (ABM Strand) won third place after a grueling finals round last March 13, 2022, via Zoom. During the preliminary round, Yap, together with Clowie Marie Patrice A. Nieva (ABM Strand), competed individually against 53 other contestants from private and public high schools in the Philippines last March 12. Both advanced to the finals round of top 12 participants. Nieva ranked second, while Yap ranked seventh.
Daniela Katrina Pauline D. Purisima (STEM Strand) also won third place for the Essay Writing contest.
“There is clearly a case to be made that having no debt is preferable to having bad debt.” Purisima wrote in her essay titled “Keep Your Credit Line In Check: Good Debts vs. Bad Debts.”
The AMPLIFY Economics Quiz and Essay Writing were national virtual events organized by UP OBEM, an organization under the University of the Philippines Diliman School of Economics. This year’s theme was “Challenging the Youth’s Role in Shaping the Philippine Political Landscape.”
Yap mentioned that she and Nieva joined the Economics Quiz to gain experience and exposure as both of them are planning to pursue careers in accountancy and business. They had limited time to prepare but immersed themselves in current reading materials that had touch points on economics in the Philippines and Asia.
Both Thomasians highlighted that what they learned during the review and contest proper was far more valuable than the triumph. Nieva pointed that the computation of the country’s unemployment rate and its impact is a lesson she would always remember.
Ms. Stephanie Ann Maridable-Remada was the chief coach. Ms. Ma. Ena Alipes and Ms. Kathrina Socorro Marquez also served as coach-advisers of the Thomasian delegates.
